Fishing charters

The 43' Jaymar Star is powered by a new 500 hp Volvo motor and has a large shaded deck ensuring plenty of room for up to 12 people, plus seating and an enclosed toilet.

On full day charters we provide light snacks, bottled water, soft drink and a BBQ to cook your BYO lunch. Port MacDonnell Fishing Charters supply everything you need to go fishing: rods, reels, tackle, bait, burley and tuition where required. At the end of the day we will fillet your catch, and then wash it in sea water to maintain freshness of the fish.

The Jaymar Star departs the Port MacDonnell boat ramp at 7 am for full day charters. Arrival time back to port approximately 3 - 4 pm (these times are negotiable with Jason). Departure time for half-day charters vary.

All levels of experience welcome!

Bluefin Tuna and Albacore  game fishing

The prime season for Southern Bluefin Tuna is February to August. Bluefin Tuna are an outstanding and powerful fighting game fish keenly sought after at Port MacDonnell. Fish taken in previous seasons have varied from 10 kg to 130 kg. Tuna is an excellent table fish and very versatile to cook with.

The Mahi Mahi (which means very strong in Hawaiian) or Dolphin Fish are an amazing fish to eat and highly sought after by the sport and commercial fisher. Being a surface-dwelling fish found offshore, they have been getting caught when trolling for Southern Bluefin Tuna at the continental shelf off Port MacDonnell. Mahi Mahi are commonly found in tropical waters but with warmer water temperatures they're being caught more often here.

Deep sea fishing

We use electric reels for Harpuka, Blue Eye Trevalla, Tasmanian Trumpeter and Ling.

Reef and bottom fishing

Full day tours targetting Gummy Shark, Snapper, Flathead, School Shark, Morwong and other reef fish.

Mako Shark fishing

The Mako Shark puts on a great fight - they have incredible speed, are champion ocean swimmers and are able to leap metres into the air. This shark is highly migratory, feeding mainly on bony fish including tuna which it hunts by lunging vertically. Makos are excellent eating.

With the option to fish at night, twilight or during the day, we can also do bottom fishing at the same time. Night-time fishing for the Mako and other species of shark are a great experience for the angler.
